January Studio Notes
Painting in a Collar
(Highly Not Recommended!)
This month has been less “running wild through the studio” and more “moving carefully like a museum artifact.” I’m healing from spine surgery, wearing a stylish (not) neck collar, grounded from driving, and operating under a long list of movement restrictions. Turns out bending, lifting, and twisting are fairly important to…well..everything! Including making coffee and pretending I’m independent.
That said, I’m healing. Slowly. Steadily. And with just enough impatience to keep things interesting.
While my body has been on a strict “do less” plan, my art has politely ignored the memo.
Three of my paintings are currently hanging with the Brazosport Art League in Clute, TX, getting out into the world while I stay put. I like to think of them as my road trip representatives.
I’m also still showing work as the Featured Artist at the Lost Pines Art Center in Bastrop, TX, —proof that things can keep moving even when I can’t. And if you’re grabbing a slice of pizza in Richmond, TX, you can still find my work hanging at Gino’s Italian Joint, quietly judging your topping choices.
So, while this month didn’t come with big studio breakthroughs or dramatic art epiphanies, it did bring a strange mix of patience, perspective, and forced stillness. Not exactly my natural state— but maybe not a bad one.
For now, I’m healing, observing, plotting future paint splatters, and learning that sometimes the most productive thing you can do is sit still and let things mend.
More movement soon. Less collar eventually. Art always.
