This painting meant to stay tidy…really, it tried. But the colors had other plans. “Trying to Behave” is full of energetic brushwork, playful marks, and a kind of joyful rebellion. With bright blues, hints of lemon yellow, and a soft scattering of square shapes across the bottom, it captures that feeling of almost following the rules—but not quite.
Painted on a day when Kay set out to “keep it simple,” it quickly took on a mind of its own. Luckily, she followed its lead.
